Some of What I Have Learned About Multiple Sclerosis

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological condition that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. It is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, which is the protective coating that surrounds nerve fibers. This results in a disruption of nerve impulses and leads to a wide range of symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, vision problems, balance issues, and cognitive impairment.

In short MS could be described as a disease of inflammation. Inflation being the immune response to an infection. So, the immune system simply doesn't stop working when the infection is dealt with.

While there is no known cure for MS, there are various treatments that can help manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. One of the complementary and alternative therapies that people with MS may turn to is herbal medicine. In this blog post, we will explore some of the herbal medicines that are commonly used to support MS, and highlight a generic treatment place that may provide some relief from symptoms.

Since my diagnosis 26 years ago I have been on a mission to learn as much as I could to help alleviate my symptoms. Herb's are just one aspect of what I do to manage my symptoms on a daily basis.

  1. Ginkgo biloba is an herb that is commonly used to improve cognitive function and memory. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect against nerve damage in people with MS. A study published in the Journal of Neurology found that ginkgo biloba may improve cognitive function in people with MS.

  2. Turmeric is a spice that is commonly used in Indian cuisine. It contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body. A study published in the Journal of Neuroimmunology found that curcumin may have neuroprotective effects in people with MS.

  3. Milk thistle is an herb that is commonly used to support liver health. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help protect against oxidative stress in people with MS. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that milk thistle may have a protective effect on the brain and spinal cord in people with MS.

  4. Ashwagandha is an herb that is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. It has anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties that can help reduce inflammation and regulate the immune system in people with MS. A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that ashwagandha may improve fatigue and quality of life in people with MS.

  5. Cannabis is a plant that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. It contains cannabinoids, which have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry found that cannabis may help reduce spasticity and pain in people with MS.

Treatment and management of symptoms

While there is no known cure for MS, there are various treatments that can help manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Here, I will provide a generic treatment plan, that I engage in myself that includes herbal medicine, exercise, and bodywork.

Herbal Medicine: has I began to highlight above herbal medicine can be used to support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and protect against oxidative stress in people with MS. Some of the herbal medicines that may be beneficial for people with MS include Ginkgo biloba, turmeric, milk thistle, ashwagandha, and cannabis. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before using any herbal supplements to ensure that they are safe and appropriate for the individual.

Exercise: Exercise can help improve mobility, balance, and strength in people with MS. Some exercises that may be beneficial for people with MS include walking, swimming, yoga, and strength training. I have embarked on a body building journey this year hand have noticed some improvement in symptoms as I have gained more muscle mass. It is important to start with a low-impact exercise program and gradually increase the intensity and duration of the exercises over time. Exercise should be performed under the guidance of an experienced professional to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for you and your circumstances.

Bodywork: Bodywork can help improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and improve overall relaxation in people with MS. Some bodywork modalities that may be beneficial for people with MS include massage therapy, and acupuncture. It is important to consult with a licensed practitioner of the chosen bodywork modality to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for the individual.

A treatment plan for a person with MS may include herbal medicine, exercise, and bodywork. It is important to work with an experienced professional to develop an individualized treatment plan that is safe and appropriate for your needs. Regular follow-up appointments should be scheduled to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed. With proper management, people with MS can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

While herbal medicines, exercise and body work may be beneficial for people with MS, it is important to consult a professional you trust before engaging in any therapy to make sure your plan suite your individual circumstances. Herbal medicines can interact with prescription medications, exercise regimes need to be well designed and body work practitioners will have experience with MS suffers, and may not be appropriate for everyone. Additionally, it's up to you the patient / client to make the commitment to your ongoing care. I have been on this journey for 26 years so far and i expect to be on it for at least another 26 years into the future,

Herbal medicine, Exercise and body work are some of the alternatives that I have found to be beneficial. However, your journey will be different, the joy of the healing journey is that you get to discover what works for you. if you are on a healing journey or know someone who is and want to support them but don't know how, reach out any time.
