Some of the medical benefits of Cannabis

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Cannabis, also known as marijuana, has been a topic of debate for many years. While some people view it as a harmful drug, others see it as a beneficial plant with numerous medical properties. In recent years, researchers have conducted extensive studies on cannabis, and the results have revealed that it has several health benefits. In this blog post, we will explore some of the medical benefits of cannabis.

Pain Relief:

One of the most well-known benefits of cannabis is its ability to relieve pain. It contains compounds called cannabinoids, which interact with the body's endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation and pain. Cannabis is particularly effective in treating chronic pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.

Anxiety and Depression:

Cannabis has also been found to be effective in treating anxiety and depression. It contains compounds that have a relaxing effect on the body, which can help to reduce anxiety and improve mood. A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that cannabis use was associated with a significant reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Epilepsy:

Another medical benefit of cannabis is its ability to treat epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Cannabis contains a compound called cannabidiol (CBD), which has been found to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in people with epilepsy. In fact, in 2018, the FDA approved the first-ever cannabis-based medication for the treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy.

Cancer:

Studies have also shown that cannabis may have anti-cancer properties. The cannabinoids in cannabis have been found to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and promote the death of cancer cells. Cannabis has been particularly effective in treating breast, lung, and prostate cancer.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

Cannabis has also been found to be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is a group of conditions that cause inflammation in the digestive tract. Cannabis has been found to reduce inflammation in the gut and improve symptoms of IBD, such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Cannabis has several medical benefits. It can relieve pain, reduce anxiety and depression, treat epilepsy, have anti-cancer properties, and treat inflammatory bowel disease. However, it is important to note that cannabis can also have side effects, and it is not legal in all states or countries. If you are considering using cannabis for medical purposes, it is important to speak to your healthcare provider to determine if it is a safe and appropriate treatment option for you.

As a natural health practitioner and holistic therapist I do not endorse the any form of recreational use of cannabis this includes smoking or consuming the plant matter for the purposes of achieving and altered state.
